I was thinking about Data today.
I was thinking about the fact that computers most likely have difficulty processing double entendres or problems that arise from equivocation. I thought fondly on a few episodes where Data would have to pause for a moment to understand a term used out of place. Or to understand a slang phrase. Or an obscure phrase in general.
And then I thought, "But he's a freakin' android." Think about it for a second. His positronic brain can process some ridiculous number of calculations in a millisecond. Obviously, far faster than modern computers can operate. So... What took him 2-3 seconds to look up a phrase in his internal dictionary/encyclopedia? I can do a "search" through the entire google database in less time than that.
Perhaps his internal database is far larger, but I would hope that it would be partitioned in such a way as to accomodate searches of that sort. In the end, it doesn't make much sense, but it's a television show.
Or IS it?
